Ottawa Senators vs. Philadelphia Flyers - Full On Hockey Brawl
The best part of TV coverage for the Ottawa-Philadelphia brawling is how quickly they were able to put on screen a graphic comparing the fighters’ heights and weights. Then it really hits the fan.
Blow-by-blow Recap:
-For reasons unclear in the video, Rob Ray of the Ottawa Senators and Don Brashear of the Philadelphia Flyers throw down their hockey sticks and gloves and start pummeling each other.
-Ray’s helmet flies off, and Brashear tries to yank his shirt off.
-The duo goes back to punching each other.
-When the referee sees that Ray is bleeding, he calls the fights, and Ray and Brashear skate away.
-As Ray skates off bleeding, TWO, OTHER, SEPARATE fights break out.
-A ref gets caught in the middle of 4 players and falls down with them.
-As the brawls merge, the benches for both sides clear, and as many as 10 Senators and Flyers are tussling.
-The melee breaks down into 4 separate fights, including one where a Philadelphia Flyer is flat out shoving with the referee.
-The fight in the corner gets pretty nasty. We see the guy pinned against the wall say a few words but can’t make them out.
-The other battle in the middle of the ice looks like it’s one when the Flyer practically has the Senator’s jersey off, but then the Flyer falls to the ground and HIS jersey starts coming off.
-With both players jersey-less, the refs break up the fight, and play returns to normal.
-Just when the game seems like it will proceed as normal, another scuffle breaks out, with two players pounding each other. As a result of that one, two separate fights also break out.
-Play returns to normal…
-…for a minute, when another huge fight breaks out, and it takes 3 refs to break it up.
-Separately and for a FOURTH FRIGGIN’ TIME, a fight erupts. The officials quell it.
-With 1 minute, 15 seconds left, the teams line up for a faceoff. Before the puck even drops, the two centers pound each other.
-The announcer: “Now it’s almost like you don’t want to be the guy that DOESN’T get kicked out of the game.”
-This 2004 game ends up being the most penalized game in the history of the NHL, and Don Brashear, who started it all, ended up getting the most penalty minutes.
